Ship Watch Inn
Historic ROOMS, Right on the C&D Canal
A Canal-Front Stay in Chesapeake City
Ship Watch Inn offers ten canal-front rooms directly on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal in Chesapeake City, Maryland. Each room opens onto an outdoor deck or balcony, and a fire pit overlooks the water. Our historic waterfront setting keeps everything close, from local shops to the canal itself.
Our inn is Chesapeake City's only lodging directly on the C&D Canal, giving every guest room water views instead of a parking lot. The ten-room scale keeps the experience personal rather than commercial, and the building's history connects back to Chesapeake City's earliest days as a stop for canal travelers.
Chesapeake City's Only Canal-Front Inn

Ten Canal-View Rooms Across Three Floors
Ten guest rooms spread across three floors, each with its own outdoor deck or balcony facing the canal. Room sizes and bed types vary, from cozy queen rooms on the ground floor to spacious king suites upstairs. Several rooms include Jacuzzi tubs, and our most popular option pairs a king bed with a top-floor sundeck overlooking both the bridge and canal.
Other penthouse-level rooms open onto similar private sundecks, while second-floor rooms offer covered balconies instead. One room offers a handicap-accessible layout and doubles as our largest standard guest room, set conveniently on the first floor near the fire pit.
Outdoor Spaces Built Around the Canal
Ship Watch Inn's amenities center on the canal itself. Every guest accommodation opens to an outdoor deck or balcony facing the water, and a shared fire pit gives everyone a place to gather outside. Top-floor rooms add private sundecks with wider views of the canal and bridge.

Private Decks and Balconies on Every Room
Each of our ten rooms includes its own outdoor deck or balcony. These spaces extend the room toward the canal, letting guests watch vessels pass, see the bridge, or simply sit outside without leaving their floor.

Outdoor Fire Pit Overlooking the Canal
A fire pit sits just outside, overlooking the water. It gives us an outdoor gathering spot beyond the private decks, open to anyone staying at the inn who wants a place to sit by the canal in the evening.

Top-Floor Sundecks With Panoramic Views
Penthouse-level rooms include outdoor sundecks with panoramic views of the canal and Chesapeake City Bridge. From here, sunsets fall behind the bridge while sunrises stretch down the canal itself.

The surrounding area offers canal-focused outings, historic sites, parks, and outdoor places to explore. Chesapeake City Water Tours and the Chesapeake City Historic District are two nearby options, with many more attractions located close to the inn and throughout the surrounding region.
Things to Do Near the Canal
Dining choices nearby range from waterfront restaurants to casual stops along Bohemia Avenue and across the canal. Bayard House Restaurant and Schaefer’s Canal House are two area options, with many more places to eat located close to Ship Watch Inn.

Walkable Streets Filled With A Unique History
Chesapeake City's historic district holds streets of restored homes and buildings dating to the 1800s, many listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The compact, walkable area blends small-town charm with modern shops and waterfront restaurants, giving you plenty to explore just steps from your room. Self-guided walking tours reveal architectural details throughout the district, offering a closer look at the town's nineteenth-century character.
Baltimore and Philadelphia both sit within an hour's drive, making the district an easy day-trip destination as well. Spend an afternoon wandering the streets, then return to the inn as evening settles over the canal.
Gift certificates make it easy to share a stay with us. They can be applied toward a reservation at Ship Watch Inn, whether booked by phone or online. Simply mention your certificate when calling to reserve, or enter the code included in your email at checkout.

The Ship Watch Inn has been our Go-To getaway for the past few years - only 20 minutes from our home, but seems like worlds away from everyday life! My favorite room has always been the Annapolis room, but for my latest getaway, I stayed in the Dorchester and loved it! The views are stunning, the rooms are unique and it is located in the historic town of Chesapeake City.
